They are completely fenced, and I think you'd have to be completely insane to consider crossing these borders at any point other than the border crossings :-) I don't know if there were actually snipers hiding behind dunes, but there were indeed watchtowers along the long stretch of road between the borders. I wouldn't doubt, either, than there are armed guards watching you along the way, though I didn't actually see any with my own eyes. It does all feel very much like a movie, and out of my normal zone of experiences.

Is there anything specific info or context I might be able to help with?

hey .. just read your article . It was really informative . I was wondering if you could tell me about the borders i.e the Qatar - Saudi border & the Saudi - UAE border .
Are they fenced completely ? as in , are the whole border areas fenced ?
You've written a little something about watch towers & snipers when u entered Saudi Arabia . I'd like to know a little more about them too .
I'll be really grateful if you send the reply to my email address .
Regards

Hi Vincent, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I also mentioned a previous article, 1001 Arabian Immigration Booths, that has a bunch of information in it, though less specific than the details I attempt in this post. And in case you missed it, there is a PDF file that contains the bulk of the information on what to do, where to go, etc.

Do keep in mind that I've written this from the point of view of a western expat, your passport and background may influence your experience, as in Qatar, Saudi and the UAE, not everyone is treated equally.

Hi Martin! I saw your butter candles shot on the Coudal website and thought it was gorgeous - and the rest of your work is equally strong. I'm glad I discovered your gallery! The bright contrasty colours really appeal to me.

Hi Martin,

I love the pictures, they all just seem to capture something that most people would never notice. I especially love Ramadan, it makes me just want to sit and stare at it.

US$ 50 / MB really is wayyyy too much. Our 4 GSM network providers here in Germany charge around EUR 9 to 24 / MB, which is still a lot. Only recently some resellers brought this down to a "kenyan level" => EUR 0,24 / MB.

Great stuff as usual Martin. I particularly like the "Oslo Lillipads" and "Nesoddtangen." I've added a small blurb on my not-so-widely-read blog, but I figure any word of mouth is good word of mouth.
